In 1953, Bill Mathews (confined to a wheelchair) started “Mathews Answering Service”. He convinced the Great Falls Clinic that there was a need for after hours answering of their phones. The Doctors would have to keep in touch with “Mathews” after hours as to their whereabouts. When a call came in for them, Bill knew where they were, and could call them. It wasn’t long before “Mathews Answering Service” had the phone company install a 25 pair cable into his home, and some equipment to actually patch callers with the doctors. Over the years, Mathews has continued to grow, Bill passed on, his wife Bertha took over, and the business was eventually sold. By the mid 1980’s, the business had grown substantially, and had the Phone Company install a 900 pair cable into the present location at 207 2nd Ave South. There were 5 side by side “cord boards” with 4 operators on at a time. A paging system was also added, so the doctors didn’t have to tell us where they are, when their beeper goes off, they call in to be connected to the caller. Present day, with modern computer technology, and several T-1 lines from the phone company, the physical size of the equipment is tiny compared to the early years, and reliability is close to 100%.
Mathews Answering Service, Inc., is still going strong, the Great Falls Clinic is still a client, and we offer all kinds of “live answering”. Anyone can become a client, private residences, construction companies, individual medical practices, etc. We answer YOUR phone calls in YOUR name, take messages, and deliver them via fax, e-mail, text, cell or pager. In fact, we are one of only a few answering services left in Montana.
